Rose garden at home

The right variety

Not all roses can be grown in small spaces and containers, and so it is important to research well beforehand about the small or dwarf varieties. Buy seeds or cuttings of climbing roses, or miniature roses, as these can be grown better in the balcony.

The importance of pot size

Rose is a root-heavy flower and needs enough space for the roots to grow and spread. So according to the balcony size, make sure the pot is atleast 12 inches wide and deep. And if you are growing roses for the first time, go with a terracotta or ceramic pot.

The right growing spot

The right spot is also pretty important when growing a little rose garden, and this spot needs to be equal parts sunny and get indirect sunlight too. During the germination phase, make sure the plant receives 2-3 hours of sunlight, and post that, about 5 hours of direct sunlight.

The best soil for Roses

Roses grow best in well-draining, and nutrient-rich soil. Most people and gardeners prefer to use a mix of garden soil, compost, sand (for good drainage), and cocopeat for the rose seeds to germinate and for the flowers to bloom.

Decide between seeds and cutting

Roses can be grown either through seeds or through cuttings. And while the seed method feels rewarding, not seeing flowers soon can be discouraging. And if this sounds like you, it is best to buy a root ball or a healthy rose plant from the nursery and begin growing.

Watering

Roses need regular watering, but overwatering can be harmful. But as summers are right here, it is best to deep water them 4 days a week, and if the sunlight is bright in your balcony, spray or mist the topsoil and stems with water once or twice a day.

Install a trellis

If you are growing a climbing rose, or just if you think that the flower might be heavy for the branches, install a trellis or add a thick stick of wood to support the plant. The support will also ensure they grow upwards, or in any other direction you want.

When to fertilise?

Roses need fertilisation, and without it, the flowers will wilt sooner than they should. So when you bring home the seeds or the sapling from the nursery, ask them the right fertiliser for the type of rose, and do your own research too.

Prune the excess

No matter how much you think that pruning will make the plant look ugly, it is important to snip off at the right time. Remove any dead flowers to promote new buds, check and cut the weak branches, and prune the leaves regularly for better nutrition of the flower.

The first Roses

If you grow through seeds, prune regularly, fertilise well, and take good care of the plant, you can see the first blooms in about 3 months from germination, and when done through cuttings and saplings, the first rose might bloom in as little as 6 weeks!
