Panaji: In 2020-21, the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education introduced the scheme under which students could opt to either answer mathematics level 1 (regular portion) or mathematics level 2 (basic). Students, who do not wish to pursue mathematics in higher education, can opt for basic math.Ever since, the scheme has gained immense popularity among students, with almost 66% or 12,416 students of 18,837 answering Class X in 2025 opting for mathematics level 2. Only 5,914 students opted to answer regular mathematics paper.
“The mathematics level 2 is very popular amongst students because it gives an option to those who do not wish to pursue higher education where they require the study of mathematics. The basic mathematics paper helps students while answering Class X. Also, they can still join science stream in Class XI, if vacant seats are available after being taken by maths level 1 students. So it is a win-win,” said Shetye.
In 2025, 95.4% who opted for mathematics level 2 cleared the subject.
The number opting for mathematics level 2 is up this year from 10,964 in 2024.
