NEW DELHI: Two people were killed and seven others injured when an SUV carrying passengers to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's event in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur veered off a bridge and plunged into a river in Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district on Sunday, news agency PTI reported.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 9 am near Kotmi village, resulting in two fatalities and seven injuries. The vehicle was travelling from Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur (MCB) district.
The SUV driver lost control on the bridge, hitting a female pedestrian before plummeting into the river below. Both the pedestrian and the driver sustained fatal injuries at the scene.
The authorities identified the deceased as Ramita Bai from Pandrikhar village and the driver, Babu Lal Chaudhary. The seven injured passengers were taken to Gaurela district hospital, with five in critical condition.
The Prime Minister was scheduled to visit Mohbhattha village in Bilaspur district to inaugurate and dedicate various development projects valued at over Rs 33,700 crore, as well as lay foundation stones for new initiatives.
