Just a day before he was officially charged with rape and sexual assault, Russell Brand made rare public remarks about his brief marriage to pop superstar Katy Perry.
While speaking candidly on his 'Stay Free with Russell' Brand podcast, the 49 year old comedian offered an introspective take on their short-lived union and why it ultimately didn’t last. The comedian and actor, who married Perry in a lavish ceremony in 2010 before filing for divorce just over a year later in 2011, explained that the split stemmed from everyday challenges many couples face. “When I was married to Katy Perry,” he said, “she wasn’t strange or difficult but just someone who happened to be incredibly famous. She wasn’t involved in anything dark or negative, as far as I could ever see.”
While Brand avoided placing blame or sharing private details, he emphasized that their breakup was the result of typical incompatibilities rather than scandal. “The marriage ended for the usual reasons marriages end,” he added. “It was nothing dramatic. I still have a great deal of respect for her.”
Brand also mentioned the ideological divide between them. “Of course, I don’t agree with her political views,” he admitted before lightheartedly noting that he also occasionally disagrees with the political stances of his current wife, Laura Brand, whom he married in 2017. “You’re never going to agree with everyone,” he said. “Even in a loving relationship, you’ll clash sometimes.”
Katy has since moved on and is now engaged to actor Orlando Bloom. The couple shares a young daughter, Daisy Dove who was born in 2020.
Though Brand’s podcast reflections may have offered a moment of personal transparency, the timing couldn’t have been more complex. Just 24 hours after the episode went live, Brand was formally charged with serious criminal allegations, casting a shadow over his public statements and prompting renewed media scrutiny.
