Mysuru City Corporation to take stringent action against single-use plastic users
Mysuru: The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a more stringent approach to combat the sale of banned single-use plastics. Commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif emphasised that not only will hefty fines be imposed on offenders, but repeat offenders will also face legal action, with FIRs to be filed against them.
Commissioner Asif led a team of officials here on Sunday and inspected several business establishments on Santepete Main Road and Sivarampet in the central business district. During the raid, authorities seized 450kg of unauthorised single-use plastic products and imposed a total fine of Rs 70,000. The operation was conducted by a team that included assistant executive engineers, environmental engineers, health inspectors, and other staff members. Despite previous circulars issued by the corporation to curb the sale of banned plastics, commissioner Asif noted that their widespread use continued to pollute the city's environment.
Asif told TOI, "Before carrying out this raid, I issued a circular prohibiting banned plastics. However, their rampant usage persisted, affecting the city's environment. Single-use plastics were found everywhere. In light of this, we decided to target bulk sellers who are continuing to sell these banned products. During Sunday's raid, we seized a significant amount of banned plastics and imposed fines on the sellers. We will continue these raids in the future, and if any firm is found repeatedly selling banned plastics, we will file FIRs against them."
