Many people are of the opinion that Lotus only grows in lakes or ponds, or near water bodies. But, if you imitate the conditions, one can grow Lotus at home as well! Here we mention how.

When not growing in the wild, the Lots plant and its variety should be picked out carefully. Select a dwarf or smaller variety of lotus which is right for pots or container gardening. Seeds of ‘Wing Lotus’ or ‘Clear moon Lotus’ can fit nicely into pots.

When thinking about growing Lotus inside a pot, make sure that at least it is wide enough to support the spread out leaves. Use a wide, shallow pot at least 18 inches wide and 8 inches deep so that the roots can spread out.

As Lotus is primarily a water plant, when growing the pot, make sure to fill it with heavy clay soil or loamy garden soil.

When growing in the wild, Lotus gets a lot of fertiliser through natural sources. But, in a pot, it is important to add it. Mix a slow-release aquatic plant fertiliser into the soil before planting.

For first timers, it is best to plant the lotus with a tuber or a ‘cutting’ of the stem. Place it deep in the soil, with the growing tip facing upward. Then, cover the tuber lightly with soil, leaving the tips exposed.

Lotus is a plant that does not mind frequent or overwatering. Add water to the pot slowly until it reaches about 2-4 inches above the soil. But, make sure to not submerge the young shoot or the growing tip.

Lotus needs atleast 6 hours of direct, bright sunlight to grow well. So, place the pot in a location that gets enough sunlight daily.

Well, the amount of water depends on the size and height of the pot. But, it is important to keep the water level higher than the soil.

When the lotus buds finally start growing, there will be a growth spurt and the leaves will start to float on the water surface. Once that is done, the flower buds will also start to show. Initially, they will be the size of a small toffee.

Once all these steps are followed and the plant receives ample water and sunlight, it will start flowering. Lotus flowers usually come from mid-summer to early fall.
