Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 opens the door for a possible GTA 6 port

The upcoming release of Cyberpunk 2077 on the Nintendo Switch 2 has revived hopes for a potential Grand Theft Auto 6 port. While enhanced hardware makes this possibility more plausible, technical challenges remain. Success with Cyberpunk 2077 could encourage Rockstar Games to consider bringing GTA 6 to a broader audience on the Switch 2.

The announcement that Cyberpunk 2077 is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 sometime later this year has sparked hope that Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) might also find its way to the console. The Switch 2's enhanced hardware makes it better equipped to play intensive games, although sacrifices will be required. Although Rockstar Games has made no hint of a GTA 6 port, the success of Cyberpunk 2077 might sway them.

Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 raises expectations for a potential GTA 6 port

Cyberpunk 2077 is a resource-intensive game, so its release on the Nintendo Switch 2 is a milestone. The original Switch had a hard time supporting high-end games, and it needed cloud-based releases for games like Control and Hitman 3. The Switch 2, however, has improved hardware, which makes it possible to support games that were previously not feasible for a Nintendo console.
The ability to optimize Cyberpunk 2077 for the Switch 2 implies that other resource-intensive games, like GTA 6, might also be in the running. Rockstar Games has a track record of porting its older games to Nintendo consoles, like Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which is still playable through backward compatibility. While GTA 6 will be one of the most ambitious games ever, the Switch 2's potential capability of being able to output 4K resolution and supporting up to 120 FPS renders a port more plausible than it was previously.

Would GTA 6 be able to run smoothly on the Nintendo Switch 2?

Even with its enhanced capabilities, the Switch 2 would struggle to run GTA 6 without extensive modifications. The game will reportedly include advanced lighting, ray tracing, and an enormous open world, all of which require heavy processing power. If a Switch 2 port were made, Rockstar would probably have to limit the frame rate to 30 FPS, lower graphical fidelity, and optimize for handheld play.
However, the success that Nintendo's platform could achieve through commerce might be enough to justify the effort. If Cyberpunk 2077 is successful on the Switch 2, Rockstar might be tempted to release GTA 6 to a larger market.
The release of Cyberpunk 2077 on the Nintendo Switch 2 demonstrates that the console can support demanding games, fueling hopes for a possible GTA 6 port. Technical limitations still pose a huge hurdle, though. Although Rockstar has made no official announcement, the potential for GTA 6 on the Switch 2 is now greater than ever.
