This paper aims to review how different approaches to social inquiry (e.g. positivist, postpositi... more This paper aims to review how different approaches to social inquiry (e.g. positivist, postpositivist, interpretive, postmodernist and critical theory) have been used in strategy research and how these main paradigms engage with strategy. In a fragmented domain , debates typically match paradigms to schools of thought and use the paradigm concept, sometimes even promiscuously, to examine the underlying premises of different theories. Thus, scholars tend to overlook the debate on philosophical meta-theoretical assumptions (ontological, epistemological and methodological) and prefer onto-epistemological approaches that are considered to be 'normal science', which underestimate the contributions of certain less traditional streams of research. This review offers a fresh view of the philosophical foundations of the strategic literature by combining author co-citation and content analysis of a sample of academic sources and analyses both the meta-theoretical assumptions and the basic paradigmatic assumptions for central constructs that strategy researchers attach to their frameworks (e.g. strategy, environment, firm and strategist). This endeavour enables scholars who work in a multidisciplinary field to gain a better understanding of the philosophical beliefs, principles and conventions held by different research communities and theoretical approaches. Exposing the underlying assumptions, as is done in this study, is a key step in theory development. Hence, this review can help researchers, young scholars and doctoral students navigate a confusing research landscape, problematize the existing literature and set new research questions.

Strategy-as-practice (SAP) has become one of the most vibrant areas of contemporary strategy rese... more Strategy-as-practice (SAP) has become one of the most vibrant areas of contemporary strategy research in the past two decades. As the field has grown significantly, we have witnessed an emergence of distinct streams of research within the SAP research community. Thus, it is time to take stock of this body of work to better understand the structure of the field and provide a refreshed agenda for future research. Our review is based on bibliometric analysis and a systematic review of 340 articles. As a result, we identify the following six clusters of research: praxis, sensemaking, discourse, sociomateriality, institutional and process. Co-citation analysis shows significant disconnects between some of these clusters. Building on our review, we identify various 'crossing strategies' for connecting across four disconnects: (i) micro and macro; (ii) sociomaterial and discourse; (iii) critical and more mainstream; and (iv) practice and process perspectives. By harnessing diversity, these crossing strategies suggest rich agendas for future SAP research, ranging from digitalization to gender inequality.

Motivated by the conflicting results on whether SMEs are better off with cyclical or harmonic amb... more Motivated by the conflicting results on whether SMEs are better off with cyclical or harmonic ambidexterity, we examine (1) through which kind of ambidexterity (i.e. cyclical and harmonic) and (2) how in practice (i.e. exploitation and exploration in product and market domains) SMEs respond to environmental changes, and (3) how such different approaches influence firm performance. By analyzing our distinctive 28-year long case evidence we demonstrate that developing, adjusting and protecting existing business (i.e., exploitation) seems to be an ongoing activity among low-tech SMEs whereas the need, direction and magnitude of exploration within product-market domains depends on the environmental conditions (i.e., upturn vs. recession), firm-specific threats (low vs. high), and on the firm’s position in the market (high-end vs. low-end).

By adopting a broad ‘embedded’ perspective, the analysis focuses both on the factors that affect trust within the inter-firm relation (endogenous determinants) and those related to the business environment that influence trust from the outside (exogenous determinants). By means of conceptual analysis based on a broad literature review focusing on institutional economics, the aim of the paper is to provide an overview that can be used as a basis for further theoretical discussion and operationalisation in empirical research especially concerning the governance of inter-firm relations in different sectoral and regional environments. For the purpose of illustration, the paper concludes with an example of a conceptual model that applies the concepts analysed in the paper.

Whereas repositioning has been seen as a way of moving closer to customers and obtaining new competencies, strategic moves aimed at increasing companies’ sphere of influence were neglected. This chapter illustrates how the power approach to repositioning, through different alternative mechanisms, complements the widespread capability view and contributes to value system analysis in servitization.

Design/Methodology/Approach: This single-case study investigates in-depth one large international solution provider to understand the detailed microprocesses and routines shaping the microfoundations of product-service system development. Findings: The study suggests that technology companies should consider creating a flexible structure to unleash many types of innovations instead of establishing tailored models to foster different innovation types and avoid falling into the exploitation trap of using innovation to only support the existing business without aiming for new explorative openings.
