Laura F-W So glad to see someone who enjoyed it as much as I did! This was my favourite read of 2015.

Warda Thank you! Thoroughly loved it! :)

Brandice I haven’t seen this version of the book cover before ^ I like it! And agree, an excellent read!

Mark I might have to try this book... I’ve read two nonfiction works by this author and they were mind-opening.

message 8: by Di (new) - rated it 4 stars

Di Definitely on my list - I was hesitating between that one and Purple Hibiscus but went for the latter in the end :( guess this one is next for sure now :) thanks for the review! I love this author!

Love. That! I remember reading it and thinking it needed to be part of our educational curriculum.

Bookadmirer You can do a lot of educational work on this book, the author is just too brilliant. My work was on diaspora.

I would read your work! 😆
And yes, this book can be dissected and studied and it would fit well into an educational curriculum.

Laura My favorite quote is when Ifemelu is attending a dinner and someone says that the doors should be open for those poor oppressed immigrants: "all understood the fleeing from war, from the kind of poverty that crushed human souls, but they would not understand the need to escape from the oppressive lethargy of choicelessness". Yes! Yes! Yes! Thank you! I loved that the main character wasn't a poor, abused immigrant. I loved her flaws and her sassyness and her strength.
