I just picked up Bitterblue from the library, really enjoyed the first two in the trilogy so I suspect I'll like this one just as well!

There's still plenty of time to catch up and join in.

message 11: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 414 comments Read Where'd You Go, Bernadette for my book club yesterday and am almost done with Hillbilly Gothic today.

Then it's back to Fool's Fate, which has me absorbed but can only be read when I have longer stretches of time, and How to Raise an Amazing Child the Montessori Way. It's an eclectic month.

message 12: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1398 comments Finished The Falls, a Rebus mystery
Another great book in the series.

Started in the HUGE TOME Memories of Ice

message 13: by Bliss (new)

Bliss | 4 comments American Elsewhere by Robert Jackson Bennett. I'm not too far into it yet, so I'm not sure where it fits in genre category, but it's already odd enough to seem beyond reality - at least my current reality!

message 14: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I'm reading The Death of Sleep

message 15: by Ann (new)

Ann | 12 comments Ohhhh, I just looked up American Elsewhere and that looks fantastic! I'd be interested to know your thoughts on it when you're done, Bliss. I hadn't heard of the author before, so thank you very much. :)

That would be American Elsewhere by Robert Jackson Bennett, which has genres listings of Horror, Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Mystery, in that order.

Bill (reedye) | 60 comments And funnily enough I just started Mr. Shivers by Robert Jackson Bennett

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 82 comments If only I could find a copy of
A Night in the Lonesome October.
I am reading Knight if Shadows by the same author, and plan to continue to the last book of that series this month.
Also reading...The Last Unicorn....when it gets here.

Trying to keep up with my groups.
:D

message 21: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I just finished Death of Sleep by Anne McCaffrey , what a cliffhanger! As I searched for the 3rd book, I read that Anne McCaffrey also wrote a book about the same even from two other characters POV and then had a book about their experience after this book. So I've ordered Dinosaur Planet Survivors by Anne McCaffrey and Generation Warriors (Planet Pirates, #3) by Anne McCaffrey , which talks about what happens to different sets of people. Whew!

In the last week I read and enjoyed Bitterblue (third in the Graceling trilogy) and Flora Segunda, which I'd picked up as a kindle bargain buy a while ago and then promptly forgotten about until a blogger I follow mentioned it last week. I liked it enough that I'm going to go get the rest of the trilogy.

I haven't been feeling very well this week, so now I'm just burying myself in some old favorite fluff re-reads (Eddings' Belgariad series) that won't require me to pay all that much attention.

Amanda | 69 comments Started Cast in Peril, not sure what I'm going to read when I'm done with it.

For that matter, what happened to April?

Yay for ebook instant gratification. :)

I've been reading Range of Ghosts by Elizabeth Bear. It's amazingly, spectacularly good. I'm going to start a pretty intensive campaign to make it our Book of the Month at some point soon.

Also just read: Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie, which may be the most intelligent space opera novel I've read since Iain M. Banks released his last Culture novel.

message 31: by Helen (new)

Helen Sounds interesting, Stefan.

That's been on my wishlist for ages now. I may have to give it a bump in priority.

I haven't read much of Bear, but I've really liked what I have read. This one sounds good!

Jenny (jennyc89) | 127 comments I'm listening to Joyland on audio. I just started it but I'm enjoying it so far! I love the narrator. It's my first Stephen King.

message 36: by Kerry (new)

Kerry (rocalisa) | 487 comments I've barely been reading - or keeping up with my Goodreads groups - for months. In September I decided I had to take a genre break and crash read my way through a bunch of cozy mysteries. It seems to have worked, as I now find myself reading fantasy and SF again and actually getting something finished.

Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey: I've had this for ages and kept being put off by the length. Once I started it, I couldn't stop and finished it in about two days.

Caliban's War by James S.A. Corey: I couldn't stop after just one and had to keep on going. I also bought Abaddon's Gate and hope to start it soon.

The Rook by Daniel O'Malley: I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and recommend it as worth trying.

Thankless in Death by J.D. Robb: I always read these when they come out.

I'm currently reading Fated by Benedict Jacka.

Others I'm hoping to get to before too long are:
Cat in the Mirror by Mary Stolz
Abaddon's Gate by James S.A. Corey
A Madness of Angels by Kate Griffin
Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie

Same! It was a great book. I'm looking forward to the sequels.

I keep hearing good things about Ancillary Justice, too.

message 38: by Chris (new)

Chris Dietzel (chrisdietzel) I'm almost done The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes and will probably start The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood next.

message 39: by Deedee (last edited Oct 20, 2013 12:22PM) (new)

Deedee | 136 comments Currently reading fantasy novel Green by Jay Lake. I had picked it up when it first came out but couldn't get past the first chapter. This time, I read the first 118 pages in one gulp. It starts off with a young girl in a bad situation, and how she copes with it.

Also reading science fiction novel A Maze of Stars by John Brunner. Coincidentally, this novel also begins with a young girl in a bad situation, which quickly turns into an adventure story.

Finally, my local library stocked a copy of Old Mars edited by George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois the day it came out in the stores. I have 2 weeks before I need to return it. There are 15 stories about "Old Mars" (meaning: the Mars of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Ray Bradbury and their fellows.) First story was really good, and so I have high hopes for the rest of the collection.

message 40: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I finished Plan B, wonderful book!

message 41: by Helen (new)

Helen I've been reading light books this month, finished off a fae series which had me trapped, not sure why as not usually my cup of tea. Then read The Rose and the Thorn which was great fun. In another group had Delirium, being a completist I finished that series yesterday. Now halfway through The Small Hand for another group. I'm not enjoying it, luckily it's tiny, 150 odd pages.

I just finished reading books 5 and 6 of the Dresden Files, and liked them quite a bit better than the first four, which I'd read about a year ago. I think I'm going to pick up The Hallowed Hunt next.

message 44: by Chris (new)

Chris Dietzel (chrisdietzel) Just finished The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood which was excellent. And just started Welcome to the Monkey House by Kurt Vonnegut because I need to satisfy my Vonnegut itch.

My husband has been reading these books and really enjoying them. I have yet to try them, but it's good to know that maybe they get better as they go on.

They do. I was pretty put off by the main character at first, but he does show some actual character growth in later books, and the worldbuilding is fantastic :)

message 47: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1398 comments Well folks, still reading Memories of Ice, just about halfway through and its very good, just slow going.
This is one author where his writing has been getting better and better. The first book was good but you could some of the dead ends and plots that kinda fizzled. By the third book I don't see any of that anymore. My only complaint is the dense prose and its taking me forever to read

I am finally back into the book I started while on vacation, Ice Mage. It has a sequel, but that may have to wait a bit since I want to read Ysabel for this group and start Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series (first book is Furies of Calderon) for a different GoodReads group.

message 49: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I'm reading In Fury Born

message 50: by Helen (new)

Helen I've started Furies of Calderon, still have WOT14, Ysabel and a group read Dark Lover to read too.
