The Bondsman Review: Kevin Bacon Show Is Bloody, Scary BUT Exactly Like Any Other Horror-Thriller
About The Bondsman
The Bondsman tries to mix action, drama, and horror. Sprinkling a generous amount of personal redemption story to tug at hearts, the horror-thriller's look and feel are of a show that we have watched several times, over and over again, on every OTT platform. However, is it engaging enough for hardcore fans of the genre to stick to its crisp runtime of approximately 30 minutes per episode? Let's find out.
The Bondsman Review: Plot
Set in the fictional town of Landry, Georgia, the series follows Hub Halloran (Kevin Bacon), a seasoned bounty hunter whose life takes a dark turn when he is murdered during a routine job. Unexpectedly resurrected by a satanic corporation, Hub is tasked with capturing escaped demons to earn his redemption and a second chance at life. As he confronts these malevolent entities, Hub also grapples with repairing strained relationships with his ex-wife, Maryanne (Jennifer Nettles), and their son, Cade (Maxwell Jenkins). The narrative weaves together episodic demon hunts with hints of family reconciliation and personal atonement.
The Bondsman Review: Direction
Under the collective direction of Thor Freudenthal, Sanaa Hamri, Catriona McKenzie, and Lauren Wolkstein, the series endeavors to balance its multifaceted genres. The directors employ classic horror tropes—such as possessions and body horror—interspersed with moments of dark humour and Southern gothic elements. However, the execution occasionally falters, with some episodes feeling rushed due to the limited runtime. The visual effects, while ambitious, sometimes reveal budgetary constraints, making the horror element not-so-scary. Another flaw is that the show, while true to its genre, is just like any other show with repetitive action sequences and thrills that do not chill after a point.
The Bondsman Review: Performance
Kevin Bacon delivers an engaging performance as Hub Halloran. A hitman who is also a failed singer and is now dead - a weird role to nail, and Bacon does it. His portrayal anchors the series, and we root for him throughout. Jennifer Nettles brings depth to Maryanne, conveying the complexities of a woman torn between past affections and present realities. The supporting cast, including Damon Herriman as Lucky Callahan, Beth Grant as Kitty Halloran, and Maxwell Jenkins as Cade, contribute solid performances.
The Bondsman Review: Final Verdict
The Bondsman tries to mix action-packed demon-hunting with sweet and sour family drama. While the series boasts strong performances, particularly from Bacon and Nettles, it does struggle with pacing and fully realising its ambitious genre fusion. In the process, it becomes a generic show that will give you deja vu of every other series you have watched with the same theme. Fans of supernatural thrillers may find enjoyment in the episodic demon confrontations, but do not start binging expecting something novel!
