One of the most important festivals of Bihar and Jharkhand, Chaiti Chhath has started from today, amidst the ongoing preparations for the worship of Goddess Durga during Chaitra Navratri and the celebration of Ram Navami. This four-day-long festival begins with the ritual of 'Nahay-Khay'.
After bathing in the Ganges, Chhath devotees will bring Ganga Jal (holy water from Ganges) home with them.
After the worship, they will partake in making prasad, which includes plain rice, dal prepared with rock salt, bottle gourd curry, and amla (gooseberry) chutney. With this, they will take the vow for the four-day-long ritual. This meal is shared with the entire family.
On Wednesday, 2nd April, the 'Kharna' ritual will take place. On this day, devotees observe a strict fast throughout the day. In the evening, a special offering of kheer and 'Sohari' (a type of bread) is prepared on an earthen stove, lit with mango wood. Once the offering is prepared, devotees take another purifying bath before making an offering to Goddess Chhathi Maiya at night. After the ritual offering, they partake in the prasad, marking the beginning of a 36-hour-long waterless fast.
On Thursday, 3rd April, during the Rohini Nakshatra and Ayushman Yoga, devotees will offer Arghya to the setting sun. On 4th April, under the influence of Ravi Yoga, they will complete the grand fast by offering Arghya to the rising sun and concluding the ritual.
