Ram Navami Date And Timings
The date and timing of Ram Navami are quite confusing for people as these are defined by the lunar calendar. This year Ram Navami will be observed on April 06, 2025. The Navami Tithi begins on April 05, 2025 at 7:26 PM and ends on April 06, 2025 at 7:22 PM.
How To Celebrate Ram Navami
Devotees in Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Ram perform traditional rituals such as, start off the day with them taking a holy dip in the Sarayu River, symbolizing purification and devotion. It is believed one is liberated from the cycle of life and death after taking a dip in this river. In rest of the country, people observe fasts throughout the day. Large processions like enactments, and havans are a common sight on this day.
In addition, Kanya Pujan is performed on this as well as on Ashtami. Kanya Pujan or Kanjak is dedicated to worshipping the goddess within young maidens. Here is how you can perform this ritual along with Ram Navami.
Do's And Dont's of Ram Navami
On the day of Ram Navami, devotees observe strict fasting, only consuming milk and fruits. Devotional songs and reciting the Ramayana are some common practices people observe on this day. Some perform special prayers and fire rituals, Havan. People worship the Ram Darbar in their homes; an idol of Lord Ram, Ma Sita, Lord Lakshman and Lord Hanuman in their feet. After this, the Kanya Pujan is observed. There is a variation to this being celebrated. Some observe it on Ashtami while others observe it on Navami. For those observing it on the day of Ram Navami, here's how you can correctly seek Ma Durga's and Lord Ram's blessings.
Kanya Pujan Vidhi
There is a variation in how Kanya Pujan is celebrated depending on cultural differences and local beliefs systems. It is believed that young girls are forms of Ma Durga. Nine girls and a young boy (Langur/Batuk) are worshipped on this day.The nine girls represent the nine forms of Ma durga, and the Batuk symbolises the form of Lord Hanuman or the benevolent form of Batuk Bhairav. He represents the form of Shiva, fiercely protecting the divine feminine. The batuk bhairav is worshipped equally to the 9 girls representing the forms of Devi. Without the Batuk Bhairav the Kanya Pujan is considered incomplete. This representation of male and female shows the important balance of both, divine feminine and masculine in a person.
These 10 individuals are bathed and are sat on a red cloth. Tilak is applied on their forehead and a kalawa is tied on their wrists. Their feet are touched to seek their blessings before they are offered the bhog. Once the Kanyas and the Batuk have finished the bhog, the devotees can eat.
Before they leave, they are given money or jewellery as gifts. Jewellery is given as it signifies the Shringar of Ma Durga. One can follow these steps and successfully seek blessings of Lord Ram and Ma Durga.
