Sebastian Baez upheld his excellence in ATP finals by defeating Alexandre Muller 6-2, 6-3 in the final of the Rio Open on Sunday. Baez defended his title at the Rio Open on Sunday by defeating France’s Alexandre Muller 6-2 6-3 to secure his seventh ATP title. The 24-year-old Baez swiftly settled into his groove, breaking Muller in the seventh game to establish a 5-2 advantage before finishing the first set with a score of 6-0.
Sebastian Baez made history as the first player to successfully defend the title of the Rio Open presented by Claro on Sunday. Considering Muller’s performance during the week, one might have presumed that the French player could pose some challenges for Baez — if not possibly win the match. After all, Muller has already secured one title in 2025 Hong Kong, and his path to the Rio final featured a straight-set win over Buenos Aires champion and Brazilian star Joao Fonseca. However, Baez appears to elevate his game to another level when trophies are at stake. This represented the 24-year-old’s sixth consecutive victory in finals going back to the beginning of 2023. He stands at 7-2 historically in ATP finals.
“I’m trying to give my best on every point,” Baez said of his success on the biggest stages. “Finals are different, because you want to win the tournament, the title, the trophy. But I’m trying to be focused on the game; that is the most difficult part of the finals. I think the support from my coaches, from my team, is so important for me. That helped me a lot.”
The World No. 31 demonstrated his status as a reliable competitor on the surface this week with a string of remarkable victories. Baez triumphed over Roman Andres Burruchaga and Chun-Hsin Tseng in straight sets.
