This applies to users of services that require the use of a Nikkei ID, such as Nikkei Online Edition (each, a “Nikkei ID Service”). 1. Acquisition of Personal Information
Nikkei will obtain information about you mainly in the following situations, to the extent set forth in “2. Purposes of Use of Personal Information”, such as providing services and communicating with you.
(1) When you register for a service
Nikkei obtains your registration information, such as your name, address, e-mail address, date of birth, and occupation, in situations that include the following:
- (ⅰ)When you register information necessary for using services or purchasing a product;
- (ⅱ)When you apply for an event or seminar, participate in a survey, or apply for a prize; and
- (ⅲ)When you make an inquiry to Nikkei about a service.
(2) When using a service
Nikkei obtains information, including the following, about the status of your use of services in association with information that identifies you:
- (ⅰ)Status of service use and product purchase history;
- (ⅱ)Whether you are registered for a service, and, if so, the details of use thereof; and
- (ⅲ)Status of applications for events or seminars, participation in surveys, and applications for prizes.
(3) When you access a website that provides services
When you access a website or app that provides services, Nikkei obtains your registered information, such as the history and status of browsing content or advertisements, and your usage environment, in association with your registered information, via IP addresses, cookies, web beacons and other similar technologies (use information that identifies you).
(4) When Nikkei receives information from partners
Nikkei may receive your personal information from its partners. This includes when Nikkei receives information, such as details about your use or status, from its partners in order to provide better services, or when Nikkei receives your transaction history or payment information from payment agencies in order to check the status of payments for Nikkei's services. If the transfer of this information constitutes the provision of personal information to a third party, Nikkei will receive only the information that you agree the partner can provide to Nikkei.
2. Purposes of Use of Personal Information
Nikkei will use the personal information obtained from you to provide services, communicate with you as necessary, improve services, and consider new services, as well as to research and analyze the status of your use of services, in order to provide content and distribute advertisements tailored to your needs, taking appropriate security control actions. Nikkei also may use your personal information by processing it into statistical information so that you will not be identified, for social contributions through the press and playing a part in economic growth.
The specifics of these uses are as set forth below.

(3) To improve services, and plan and develop new services
Nikkei uses your personal information to improve its services and to plan and develop new services. Nikkei also may use your personal information to research the actual use of services and perform surveys.
(4) For research and analysis, in an effort to provide services tailored to your needs
In addition to information such as your area of residence, occupation, and type of work, Nikkei will research and analyze your needs using information, such as information you registered in connection with a service, your service use history, event participation history, and your history of browsing content and advertisements. Nikkei also may associate your personal information with the use information of other users of its website to research and analyze your needs.
(5) To provide content and distribute advertisements tailored to your needs
Based on the results of the research and analysis described in paragraph (4), Nikkei will provide its or its partners' content, and will distribute advertisements for Nikkei and advertisers that are tailored to your needs.
(6) For social contribution through data analysis
In addition, Nikkei may use personal information obtained from you for purposes other than providing services, by processing the data into statistical information so that you will not be identified. Examples include when Nikkei uses information for the press or provides it to companies or local governments for public purposes, such as disaster countermeasures and regional development. In order to contribute to society by playing a part in economic growth, Nikkei also may provide statistical information for purposes of making it available for corporate economic activities. 3. Provision of Personal Information
Nikkei does not provide your personal information to third parties without your prior consent, nor does it sell or lend such information.
However, when any of the following items applies, Nikkei may provide your personal information to third parties to the minimum extent necessary, without obtaining your prior consent:
- (ⅰ)When disclosure is required by law, court judgment, decision or order, government or public office, or their equivalents;
- (ⅱ)To the extent deemed necessary to protect the rights, property, services, and other interests of Nikkei or a third party, if you have violated any law, applicable terms and conditions, or the equivalent thereof, and it is difficult to obtain your consent;
- (ⅲ)When there is an urgent need, such as an imminent danger to the life, body, or property of a person, and it is difficult to obtain your consent;
- (ⅳ)When a third-party academic research institution or similar organization needs to handle your personal information for academic research purposes (including situations in which the academic research purpose is part of the purposes of handling your personal information, and excluding when there is a risk of undue infringement of your rights or interests); or
- (ⅴ)Other situations permitted by law.
In addition, Nikkei may provide your personal information to the following third parties on the condition that you have agreed to the Nikkei Privacy Policy (including former policies), other privacy policies separately established by Nikkei, or the content explained during the registration process for services or events. In these situations, Nikkei will ensure that the recipients use your personal information only for the intended purposes and handle it appropriately.

4. Joint Use of Personal Information
Nikkei uses your personal information jointly with third parties in accordance with the following conditions. Examples include where Nikkei Inc. and Nikkei Group Companies jointly use personal information within the scope of the purpose of use set forth in the Nikkei Privacy Policy. Provision of personal information in connection with joint use is one of the methods of providing personal information permitted by the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (“Act”).

Nikkei may outsource part or all of the handling of personal information obtained from you within the scope of the purpose of use specified in the Nikkei Privacy Policy, in conjunction with the outsourcing of part or all of its affairs, such as responding to service inquiries, operating websites and systems, and processing and analyzing a variety of research results. In these situations, Nikkei will select and supervise an outsourcee that Nikkei believes will handle personal information appropriately. The provision of personal information in connection with the outsourcing of the handling of personal information is one of the methods of providing personal information permitted by the Act.
6. Anonymously Processed Information
Nikkei may provide personal information obtained from you to third parties by turning it into anonymously processed information that cannot identify a specific individual or be restored. Anonymously processed information is created and provided for the purpose of improving services, planning and developing new services, and other purposes that are beneficial to you. Provision of anonymously processed information to third parties without your consent is permitted, subject to announcing the matters required by the Act and expressly notifying the third-party recipient that the information provided constitutes anonymously processed information. 7. Requests for Disclosure of Personal Information; Other Inquiries
You can request notice of the purpose of use, disclosure, corrections, additions to or deletion of, cessation of use or erasure, and cessation of provision to partners and other third parties of your personal information handled by Nikkei in connection with its services (“Requests for Disclosure”). You also can file any complaints with Nikkei that you may have regarding the handling of personal information by Nikkei.

8. Provision to Third Parties in Foreign Countries
Nikkei may provide personal information to third parties located in foreign countries (countries or regions outside Japan), for example, in the situations set forth in “3. Provision of Personal Information”. The third-party recipients to which Nikkei provides personal information comply with legal regulations for the protection of personal information in the relevant countries.
